Kitchen designers disagree about nearly everything — cabinet styles, colors, open shelving. But on layout, the pros are unanimous. These five rules survive every trend cycle because they’re about how humans actually move and cook.

1. Protect the Work Triangle

Sink, stove, refrigerator: the three points you bounce between hundreds of times a week. Keep each leg between 4 and 9 feet, and never route household traffic through the middle of it.

2. Landing Zones Are Non-Negotiable

Every appliance needs a place to set things down: 15 inches of counter beside the fridge, 12 inches on each side of the cooktop, and clear counter next to the wall oven. No landing zone means hot pans hunting for a home.

3. The Dishwasher Lives Next to the Sink

Within 36 inches, always. You scrape and rinse at the sink and load without taking a step. Put it anywhere else and you’ll drip across the floor for a decade.

4. Aisle Widths Make or Break the Room

42 inches minimum for one cook, 48 for two. Islands squeezed into narrow rooms are the most common — and most regretted — kitchen mistake.

5. Store Things Where You Use Them

Pots by the stove, knives by the prep counter, glasses near the sink or fridge. If you have to cross the kitchen for something you use daily, the layout is fighting you.
