Moving be chaotic and overwhelming … where do you start? Here’s a few things to get you started.
BEFORE YOU SELL
[ ] Toss & Donate! You know the old adage – if you haven’t worn it or used it in the past year, it’s time to go. Plan a yard sale, donate to area not-for-profits, give things away! You don’t want to move something that takes up space.
[ ] Think like a buyer. “Less is more” when you look at a room. Depersonalize, declutter, stage a room. Prospective buyers want to see themselves living there. It’s never too early to pack some boxes … and store in a local storage center!
[ ] Do an inspection. Yes! Have a friend walk through your home with fresh eyes and give your their honest advice for fix-ups. Another option: pay for a licensed home inspector and get a heads-up for potential repairs a buyer may request. Your Signature Real Estate Services salesperson can recommend a few names.
BEFORE YOU MOVE IN
[ ] Get your insurance in order so you’ll have coverage the day you close. Your closing coordinator at the bank or attorney office should remind you also.
[ ] Contact utilities. Have the electric, gas, water, cable, internet placed in your name and new address. Don’t forget to stop service at your current address too! Your Signature Real Estate Services salesperson will have a list of utility numbers, if you need it.
[ ] Foward your mailing address. Easy! Stop by the post office for one of their handy cards – or better yet – jump online at USPS.com (the link is under Quick Tools) – it’s free to do and will take a couple week’s notice.
[ ] Arrange moving help! Friends get busy, moving companies and rent-a-truck get booked … plan ahead. Yes, closing dates can fluctuate but most moving companies are willing to work with you. And if your friends are helping – remember pizza & beverages are needed!
[ ] Meet the neighbors! Take a stroll around the immediate neighborhood and introduce yourself. Check out The Nextdoor app to connect with neighbors and find lost pets!
